My name is Griselangel Paula and I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. At the age of 11 my family and I moved to the United States in search of the American dream. I never envisioned becoming a model; my lifelong ambition was to be an actress. I went to high school in NYC where I took 4 years of theater and drama lessons. Nevertheless, my insecurities got the best of me; I honestly didn’t think there was a place for me in the acting world. I am six feet tall, a size 12, and at the time I had a thick Spanish accent, what role could I ever possibly play? It’s not often that you see a curvy girl playing a primary role, and I felt at the time that if I pursued acting, I was going to fight a battle I was not going to win. This perception has totally changed, especially seeing such gorgeous actresses like Christina Hendricks light up the screen with her talent and curves.
I decided to go to college for Criminal Justice because I am really passionate about law enforcement. Currently I’m pursuing my master’s degree in the field. Towards the end of my sophomore year in college, my best friend encouraged me to try modeling. At the time I didn’t really understand that there was such a thing as plus size modeling. After doing some research and learning that there was a major demand in the industry, I decided to make this one of my primary goals. Soon, I was greeted into the industry with a six page spread in Ebony Magazine. Ever since then I have modeled for numerous companies and designers such as Kmart, Plus Model Magazine, Rocawear, Baby Phat, Beyonce’s House of Dereon, Biflex and Applebottoms amongst many others.
There are highs and lows in this industry but I have grown to love it in the past two years, and have become confident and so certain with my own self, that I know that everything will fall into place.
