It seems every country views “Plus Size” differently, for some countries a size 12 and up is beautiful and very accepted, actually embraced. Unfortunately in other countries anything over a size 6 is frowned upon….why is that??
Australia, a country where curves are sought after and the average women’s size is now a 16, will proudly feature plus size models in the media. The UK average size is also a 16 and they promote plus size beauty and fashion as well as give a positive portrayal in the media. Now when we get to the United States, where the average size is a 14, you will find that being “Plus” is shunned and discriminated against in just about every aspect of mainstream America. The only time you see anyone full figured, generally is when a company is advertising something negative such as diet pills that probably due more harm to your body than having a few extra pounds.
Now here’s where it gets interesting, [pullquote_light_left] Why is being full figured so discriminated against in the US, yet more plus size fashion is created here than any other place in the world?? [/pullquote_light_left] I have gone through all 221 clothing stores listed on Plusforus.com and over 80% of them are based in the United States…Why is being full figured so discriminated against in the US, yet more plus size fashion is created here than any other place in the world?? Truth is, being curvy is more common than not and only a small majority of people are actually “normal” as the media would put it…their definition, not mine. Its 2011, I don’t believe in size acceptance…I believe in acceptance of all people and I can say that from what I’ve seen in the last 3 years alone, the plus size world has come a long way! There has been a major boom in the full figured industry from models to bloggers, stores, entertainment, fashion shows and more.
I am not sure exactly why size acceptance is based on your geographic location but I would love your opinion. Is “Plus Size” accepted where you live?
